Don't know what it is? I didn't either, until today. I learned it after spending 8 hours in the ER with my 5 year old son Ike. He's been running a fever since Sunday, and after the doctor appointment on Monday I thought it would run its course and this would be over. I was wrong.
My son had severe stomach pain from 10:30 AM to approximately 2:30 PM. He finally got relief when the second IV was successfully inserted into his hand (the second one) and they were able to administer pain medication!
Basically, mesenteric lymphadenitis is the inflammation of the lymph nodes in the abdomen. It mimics appendicitis. In fact, the doctor told us that before CAT scans, 20% of people who went to surgery thinking they had appendicitis had mesenteric lymphadenitis. If you want more info you can check it out at: http://www.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/mesenteric-lymphadentitis.
He's doing much better now and I'm proud of how brave he was today! He endured all kinds of things today including drinking 600 ml of contrast material, having 2 IV's, a CAT scan, and a ton load of pain and after all that he still wanted his Grandma to take him to the dollar store (which they had planned on doing after his doctor appointment). Gotta love kids!

spent 5 hrs with my 13 yo grandson last night in the er. he was walking home from a friens house when it hit him. he let out a scream, grabed his L side & fell to the street. a neighbor saw him & called 911. police came with paramedics at about the same time my daughter was driving down the street from work. scared her to death. we thought he was having a heart attack he couldn't breath, like he had a broken rib or pleuesy. they gave him morphene by iv with very little relief. after 5 hours they were talking about apendicitis & i thought they were crazy. he was holding his L side under his arm & down his L side. how could it be apendisitis? that would be lower R quadrant. sent us home with this diagnosis & pain med. said he needed bedrest for 3 days. little less explaination. Had to go on line to check it out

My 12 year old son had pain on the right side, upset stomach but no fever. He was at the Dr. Office three times in four days, they finally admitted him to figure out what was wrong. He was totally dehydrated, had a very difficult time getting an IV in (poked 6 times before finding a vein), and the then alarm went off every 2 hours, they had to come in take the tape off, rest the IV and retape. They did CT scan, Xray, blood work, blood culture, urinalysis, and never came up with an answer, so they discharged him, that was Saturday evening. Monday morning we were back at the Dr.s office, this time he had an ultrasound, in less then a hour, the Dr came out to give us the good news, just an answer was all I wanted, he said it is Mesenteric lymphadenitis; but he was still not out of the woods, the CT scan showed his appendix was thickend. But still no fever. Just thankful to have an answer, and so is my son. Lubbock TX
